The Razzle Dazzle of Art Deco Jewellery
The decade between 1920 to 1930 was often described as “an in between wars” era that was best known for Jazz, the Great Depression, great fashion and jewellery that was beautifully dazzling and unlike anything previously. World War 1 had finished and life was returning to normal. Woman’s fashions saw popularity in short hair, flapper dress styles and a movement away from previous restrictive clothing of earlier years. Women were enjoying a more liberated era and this reflected in the art deco jewellery of this time.
Art deco jewellery is described as a mixture of styles (neoclassical, constructivism, cubism, modernism and futurism) used to reflect an era of elegance, glamour, functionality and modern design. The end of the war saw a greater access to diamonds and other precious stones which were then used in much of the jewellery of this time.
For the first time diamonds and other stones were being used together during the art deco period of jewellery making, as well as the use of more geometric shapes. There were also many Egyptian motifs used in art deco jewellery which reflected society’s interest in the 1922 discovery of King Tutankhamen’s Tomb in Egypt. Along with these influences there were also strong eastern influences during the art deco phase of jewellery. Gemstones, ivory and jade were used more prominently in jewellery of this time.
Coco Chanel also influenced art deco jewellery when she introduced costume jewellery to complete the costume. This ideal permeated throughout the fashion cultures and solidified art deco jewellery in jewellery history.
The Art Deco movement of design, style and fashion ceased when the world was hit by the Great Depression and the outbreak of World War 2.
